Role overview
MC De Villiers Brokers CC is strengthening its medical risk advisory capability through the appointment of an experienced and commercially driven Short-Term Insurance Representative.
The successful candidate will advise medical practitioners and healthcare professionals on Medical Malpractice, Professional Indemnity and related short-term insurance solutions, covering the complete client and policy lifecycle: risk assessment, quotations, new business, renewals, endorsements, amendments, cancellations, claims support and ongoing servicing.
A significant component of the role involves financial control. The candidate must be comfortable working with detailed schedules, premium records, commission statements, insurer accounts and reconciliation reports. Reconciliation is treated here as part of accurate portfolio management, not as a finance-department function.
Key responsibilities
- Advise healthcare professionals on Medical Malpractice and Professional Indemnity insurance, assessing professional exposure and identifying appropriate limits of indemnity, extensions and supporting covers.
- Explain claims-made policy structures, retroactive dates, run-off cover, exclusions, conditions, excesses and disclosure obligations clearly.
- Conduct detailed risk-needs analyses covering profession, scope of practice, claims history, business structures and staff exposure.
- Obtain quotations from suitable insurers and underwriting managers, present comparisons, negotiate terms and complete new-business placement.
- Manage renewals proactively — preparing schedules, obtaining updated risk information, comparing terms and securing written client instructions before expiry.
- Process endorsements, amendments and cancellations accurately, including additions or removals of practitioners.
- Support clients through claims notification, documentation and insurer liaison, escalating complex or contentious matters.
- Reconcile insurer statements, premium records and internal schedules, perform commission reconciliations and investigate unmatched transactions.
- Maintain detailed reconciliation working papers and audit-ready supporting documentation, and assist with broker, insurer and scheme audits.
- Administer medical-practitioner and professional-indemnity schemes, maintaining accurate member, policy and premium records.
- Maintain accurate client, policy and activity records in the CRM system, with reminders for renewals and outstanding documentation.
- Operate within FAIS, FICA, POPIA and TCF requirements, maintaining fit-and-proper status and current CPD records.
Minimum requirements
- Minimum of three years’ proven experience in Medical Malpractice and/or Professional Indemnity insurance.
- Current or recent experience as a FAIS-compliant Short-Term Insurance Representative.
- RE5 completed and relevant Class of Business training for Short-Term Insurance completed.
- Appropriate recognised insurance qualification or credits, and good regulatory standing.
- Strong technical understanding of claims-made policies, retroactive dates and run-off cover.
- Understanding of Medical Malpractice and Professional Indemnity underwriting structures.
- Strong financial understanding and numeracy, with proven ability to perform commission reconciliations.
- Experience preparing reconciliation reports and supporting audits.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel capability.
- Valid driver’s licence and own reliable vehicle.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with medical-aid products or healthcare schemes.
- Existing relationships or client portfolio within the medical-professional market.
- Experience managing group or affinity schemes and working with specialist underwriting managers.
- Exposure to premium bordereaux and insurer account reconciliations.
- Experience with broker-management or policy-administration systems.
- Additional qualifications in insurance, finance or healthcare administration.
Systems exposure
Strong Excel and financial reconciliation capability will be tested during the recruitment process, covering commission, premium and statement reconciliation, variance identification, reversals and adjustments, reconciliation schedules, audit support files, large spreadsheets, formulas and lookup functions, pivot tables, filters and data validation.
Skills and competencies
- High attention to detail and strong technical insurance knowledge.
- Financial accuracy and analytical thinking.
- Regulatory awareness and administrative discipline.
- Ability to explain complex policy terms simply to non-insurance professionals.
- Negotiation ability and commercial awareness.
Personal attributes
Highly organised, proactive and financially disciplined, with the professional credibility to engage doctors, specialists, allied healthcare practitioners and practice managers, and the ability to independently manage new business, renewals, servicing, claims support and client communication.
